We hope all of our SUSWA members, supporters, fans and their families have a fun filled and safe summer. This is generally a period when many of the "perfomance ready" SUSWA singer/songwriters and bands are the busiest. All corners of Southern Utah continue to be entertained by our members and associates. Check out the itineraries of Jared Johnson and the Jackpines, Crippled Stripper, Eric Dodge Band, and many others throughout the summer months. Concerts and Festivals, Farmer's Markets, and shows throughout Cedar City, Springdale, Virgin
St. George, Ivins, Beaver Dam, and beyond have been very active. It is to the credit of the fine music creativity, talent, and improved marketing skills of all of you this is available to the area residents. Check all the entertainment sources like The Independent, Whereits@, 435events.com, the notices sent out by Groovacious, and this website, and links to seek out your favorite bands and performers. Yvonne Wall is the "gate keeper" of this site and has been working hard to include as much current info as possible. She also needs your help.If you are a performing singer/songwriter or band, your info and schedules can be inserted on this site - but you must be current members. For all inquiries go to the menu and click on "contact" or write to suswa@suswa.net or. . . you can write to me at rpanessa@msn.com.
SUSWA "Tune-smithing" meets every Wednesday at 6pm at Dan's Guitar Repair at 705 North Bluff for open constructive critiques of songs and song structure. the public and prospective new members are always welcome. This is followed on the same night by SUSWA's "Open Mic" at Jazzy Java Cafe' at 8pm. Each participant is limited to 2 of their best tunes.
The "Open Mic" has been a huge success for SUSWA, but mostly for the hundreds of performers who have found a home on Jazzy's stage, and the audiences who continue to fill the seats every week.
Colgate Country Showdown - July 4
I could not find who the finalists were. Hoping Marty Lane sends me an e-mail before hand and
a reminder I've just started lining up talent for the SUSWA Fall Concert Series just around the corner. More good times and music for Southern Utahns.
See you this Wednesday

We are looking for a talented Utah songwriter to create original songs for an upbeat school assembly about safety. Geared toward elementary school-age children, the assembly will center around music and be performed throughout the state of Utah and around the country.

You will write 5-6 original songs including lyrics and sheet music, and help produce minus tracks and full production vocal/music tracks. Specific subject matter and access to a collaborative team will be provided.

If you are interested, or know anyone else who is, please contact Becky Wickstrom at bwickstrom@intrepidagency.com by July 6.

Rich,
Emjoyed your article in the Spectrum. My LTE was just above it. Got a call from Mrs. Curry, she says you call her your #1 fan. I write articles and songs. My brother writes cowboy novels. I've written and or produced 4 albums of Island songs. However I do have some country songs that I've demo'd that I would like to have you listen to. They've never been released or published so you can do as you like with any that you like. I live in Washington Fields. Call me or email me.
Thanks, Billy Tedreck 251-9844

SUSWA has a lot on it's plate in 2009. The "Open Mic" at Jazzy Java is a major success and if you haven't attended or performed get down there on Wednesday night at 8 pm. It's located at 285 North Bluff in St. George. Last week we nearly filled the house and had 20 performers. It's not just an event either; we've signed up a bunch of new members on Wednesday night because as you know songwriting and performing can be contagious.
The song writing seminar with Pat Pattison took place without a hitch at Dixie College on
March 27 & 28. Anyone who attended will tell you he's a master at technique and setting up sign posts for the writer to use as a guide. Good stuff and certainly worth every penny.
The SUSWA Spring Concert Series line-up is set and again we will showcase fine local talent. The four consecutive shows will be presented on Thursday nights at 7 pm beginning April 23 and 30 & May 7 and 14. Dan's Guitar will provide some of the sound for us. The line-up of talent looks like this: Kim Whitney and Stillhouse Road, Misty Murphy and Sam Payne, Nancy Hamblin and Honky Tonk Heroes, and finally Boston Crockett & Paul Barfuss opening for the Rok Dox. ( Free to the public )
Don't forget there is also a host of talented performers at the St. George Arts Festival and on the weekends at Jazzy Java, Toadz in Cedar,
the Red Coyote Cafe in Virgin and others.Check your e-mails, The Independent, and The Spectrum
for performances all over the place.
Yvonne is really doing a nice job keeping the website as current as possible. More SUSWA members are getting gigs, and it's becoming a full time position.
Don't forget - this is only April and

I was fortunate enough to attend the Pat Pattison Songwriting School and found it to be the best I ever attended. It was so great to have it right here in St George as it saved a lot of money for travel, motels and food. Thanks to Yvonne and others who made this possible. Pat is a very entertaining and interesting teacher, but more importantly, he taught things that I had never imagined were part of good songwriting. When he critiqued our songs he was very respectiful of us and our songs. Those who attended asked some great questions and presented some excellent songs. This all made for a wonderful experience.

Thanks to all,

Lee Taylor

Hey Rich, Glad to see you are doing what you always wanted to. Going back to Vegas next month. Seems this is an annually thing for me the past few years. Hey if you get a chance, There is a film you have to check out when it comes out in the movies. Its called The Winning Season (its a basketball version of the bad news bears), I am in the final scene. I finally made it to the silver screen! They were just at the Sundance Film Festival in your neck of the woods , as Uncle Buckets would say. We are in, and everything is "just right"!

Hi SUSWA friends! As some of you know I am involved with a Theater Group called Dixie Dramatic Association. We have a play coming up about the women in Lincoln's life. I need a guitar player who would like to play a few songs for this production. "Skip to my Lou" - "Turkey In The Straw" and perhaps a few others. If any of you are interested please get back to me! The play is on February 19, 20, 21, 23. There will be rehearsals you will need to attend also. Thanks, Lauretta

Have a play written about 25 years ago and no music is put to it yet. No talent in writing music here. A few people have been approached to get music done. No takers within reason. Problem is they all want cash in advanace. No way! I am willing to give credit for writing music and share copyrights as the basic lyrics are already written. You guessed it! the play is a musical. There is very little to the script that is spoken words. The music needed runs in nature from comical to classical.

Anyone want to take this misic writing project on so that the production of this play can be sought? Or would it be a good Association collaboration project? Contact:udbma@infowest.com

Thanks, Vic

May I take this opportunity to welcome the recent entries into the "guest book" portion of this site. I am encouraged by the new interest in our growing organization and expect 2009 to be an exciting one for our writers and musicians. I am still anticipating the "open mic" at Jazzy Java will happen beginning January 8th at 7pm and continue for 12 weeks. Yvonne is still hammering down a local venue for the Songwriting Seminar scheduled for the end of March with Pat Pattison. Get your money in for a valuable 2-day learning experience. We'll also continue the SUSWA meets with the songs of the week and month hosted by John West. They are proving to be a lot of fun and a great way to assist one another. The spring and fall concerts still have to be scheduled, plus all of the other gigs our members will have lined up, plus our friends KTIM radio want to get as much live talent on the air as possible. Don't forget about that either.
Most of all I want to wish all of you a wonderful Merry Christmas, and all the best in 2009.

I really enjoyed the get together on Nov. 11. I thought all the songs
had possibilities. Hats off to John, Yvonne, and Dan for making this possible. I think things will only get better in song writing.
P.S.

Thanks again Dan for the keyboard.

The first of a series of 2008 SUSWA Fall Concerts was a complete success last Wednesday, Sept 10th.
An audience of 50 to 60 were treated to the soulful songwriting guitar work of Amy Whipple aka Xena aka Amie Marie.
She has been a enthusiastic new SUSWA member and I wanted to get an audience reaction to her work. As I expected, they loved it. She has been invited to be on my KTIM 101.9 FM "American Dream" show this Thursday at 10am to talk a little and play some tunes.
The featured performers "Desert Heat" continue to prove why they are a credit to SUSWA and the local music scene. Their mix of popular classic rock cover tunes and contemporary country pleases audience members of all ages. The band sounded "really tight" and do it all without a lot of bells and whistles. The entire night was a lot of fun - even the lawn sprinkler system that erupted in the middle of the show didn't deter the crowd or their enthusiam. "Desert Heat" performs at the OC Tanner Amphi-theater on Thursday & Friday evenings and has several dates in Novemeber at The St. George Elks Lodge behind Dixie Red Hills Golf Course. Good job to everyone. The next show is this Wednesday on September 17 at 7pm with Loni Stookey & Nic Chamberlain followed by Evazing.
Don't miss this one gang !!

Hey everyone! I'll be performing at the Hot Momma Makeover at the Dixie Center on September 6th with part of my group, "Soul Proprietor". I'll be singing songs off my new CD there. I'm assuming we won't be rained-out like at Peach Days in Hurricane since it will be inside! Check out my website at www.LeifSinging.com. I'll be able to post up-coming gigs and performances there and you can order CDs off it or down load songs. Thanks, Leif

Thanks EVERYONE for the support we have received while trying to put these 2 compilations together. It was way. . . . . more work than last go around! I guess that's expected when you do 2 albums instead of 1. I think you are all going to love the music.

We had an amazing amount of music sent in. Far more than we anticipated and while this was great, it required us to have to make some serious decisions on which songs would make the cut. I can tell you, that it wasn't a pleasant job.

In the mean time, come and support your local SUSWA members performing at the DownTown Thursday Night Celebrations going on the next 8 weeks. You won't be disappointed!!!!

Terrific work by Spiral Studios, Yvonne, and all who contributed with ideas for this new website. It was SUSWA's commitment to re-energize the rank and file with new and exciting projects and goals like the web, the CD compilation, participating in the "Downtown Thursday Night" venue in 2008, expanding the membership roster, "creating a buzz
about us with a better than ever Spring and Fall Concert Series at Ancestor Square, and recruiting support from the community and local business. SUSWA has not even scratched the surface of what we can become. In the weeks ahead I would expect many of you to forward updated photos and bios, and always remain SUSWA reps by assisting others to find their way to the songwriters and music of Southern Utah. Remember my radio show is on KTIM 101.9 FM. "The American Dream" promotes SUSWA every Thursday at 10 am and I'm still interviewing SUSWA members and others in the community "live". Bring your music and itinerary and join the show.
I would also congratulate the boys back in New York for the nice comments. Secretly they've always wished I would be accepting some award on CMT just so I would get up on stage and say, "Hey Pete, I told you I'd make it." But while that's still a dream, I really appreciate their support and enthusiam. Thanks boys!
